Our Curriculum

Geography is organised to allow students to study a wide range of Physical and Human Geography topics. Topics are sequenced in order to allow students to build upon prior knowledge and make connections between different elements of the curriculum.  Within topics we have a focus on specific places, people and environments; this allows learning to be tangible and relatable to students, consequently, supporting and cementing the acquired knowledge.  As part of the Geography curriculum we have a commitment to conducting fieldwork enquiries in all year groups, as well as developing students’ skills to produce evaluative extended writing. These skills form the foundations of Geography as an academic discipline, as well as providing students with the transferable skills to excel across all subjects.

Getting Better at Geography

Students get better at Geography through developing locational knowledge of the world’s countries, urban areas and landscapes, progressively learning more about the Human and Physical Geography that shape them, and crucially, forging links between the different aspects of the subject as they become more confident, and widely read.  As a result, students can successfully construct written work, using evaluative language to weigh up issues, form conclusions and appreciate conflicting viewpoints. Good Geographers are also proficient in all elements of a fieldwork enquiry, cartographic, numerical and graphical techniques and will ultimately be able to apply these effectively to any given context.

Beyond School

We hope that many of our students will choose to study Geography at GCSE, A Level and beyond. However, this not the end goal.  At Stretford Grammar we want every student who studies Geography to take away the important role they play in shaping the world they live in, from having global aspirations to contributing to their local community. Geography allows students to critically understand current affairs and the ever-evolving physical and human environment that we occupy.  A Geography lesson may spark a students’ interest in visiting a place and change how they view countries, as well as developing a deeper understanding about the intricacies of the world via the knowledge they have acquired in school.
