Stretford Grammar Shines in Stirring Production of The Empress

Drama is Alive and Kicking at Stretford Grammar School!

Stretford Grammar School recently staged a stunning production of The Empress by Tanika Gupta, captivating audiences across three incredible performances. A talented and diverse cast of students brought the play to life, portraying its rich historical narrative with passion and depth.

The Empress is a powerful story set in the late 19th century, following the experiences of Rani Das, an Indian ayah (nursemaid) who arrives in Britain and navigates the challenges of class, race, and identity during Queen Victoria’s reign. The play explores the often-overlooked histories of Indian servants and lascars (sailors) in Britain, alongside Queen Victoria’s own fascination with India, particularly through her relationship with Abdul Karim. With its themes of migration, resilience, and cultural connection, The Empress provided a moving and thought-provoking experience for both cast and audience.

Mrs. Lees, Head of Drama, expressed immense pride in the students’ dedication and talent: “This was a truly ambitious production, and our students rose to the challenge with extraordinary commitment. Their performances were outstanding, and I could not be prouder of how they embraced the story’s themes with such maturity and sensitivity.”

The play was not only a theatrical triumph but also a multimedia project. The performances were filmed, and Year 10 student Henry is now undertaking the task of producing videos of the production. These recordings will soon be available for students, parents, and carers to enjoy and relive the magic of the performances.

Congratulations to all involved in this remarkable production, which has once again showcased the exceptional talent and dedication within Stretford Grammar School’s drama department.
