Trafford Schools Rugby Tournament

Captain George Fleet and Vice-Captain Johnny Jones lead the Year 8 Rugby Team to success

Captain, George Fleet and Vice-Captain, Johnny Jones, led their Year 8 Rugby Team to great success at the most recent Trafford Schools Rugby Tournament. Five full squads attended to compete for first place.

Firstly, the boys got off to a very strong start against BTH, where they eventually won 4-0. Try scorers included Morgan Yeung, a brace from Sam Fletcher and Johnny.

Next, we played against Ashton on Mersey, who competed a bit more defensively with us. Again, we won, and the game finished 3-1. Johnny scored twice and Jared Chimpango scored his first of the tournament.

After a short break, we played Wellington. From the sideline, this was the greatest contest of the four matches, which finished 2-3. Powerful Johnny scored twice. We were close to evening the scoreline during the last play of the match, but the team fell just short of first place here.

ACA - 4-0

Finally, we beat a very fast Altrincham College team. But defensively, we were too strong at this point. Tries came from Joe Southall, Jared, Daniel O’Keefe and Johnny.

Stretford Grammar finished second place in the tournament, winning 3 of their 4 games. The coaches, Mr Dutton and Mr Clark were seriously impressed by the talent and teamwork shown by the boys. Mr Dutton highlighted that it was the best performance he’s ever seen by a Stretford Grammar Rugby Team in his time at the school. They’re excited to challenge Wellington and others to win the next one.

Final mentions include:

Mo Fakandu - Coaches Player of the Tournament for his tackles and defensive pressure, which led to us turning the ball over and scoring.

Jared - Player’s Player of the Tournament for his carries, tackles and tries.

Johnny, of course, also displayed excellence throughout!

Thank you, Steve Hanley @traff_sch_rugby for organising the event.
