Welcome to our School

Year 8 explore how glaciation has shaped Snowdonia.

On a fresh summer’s day......,

....the whole of Year 8 set off to Snowdonia to explore how glaciation has shaped the landscape.  In an action-packed day, students were able to see the impact humans have had on the landscape, and importantly, how the landscape has shaped how we use it and appreciate it.   The first stop was to Cwm Idwal, a perfect example of a glacial corrie on a mountainside, which looks down the U-shaped valley of Nant Ffrancon. Year 8 were able to build on their knowledge from class, using OS map skills to spot glacial features, as well as trying their hand at data collection; recording the positive and negative impact humans have had on the environment.

After a quick hike down the mountainside, it was onto our next stop, the National Slate Museum in Llanberis, where students were able to see how humans have used natural resources throughout history. The slate splitting demonstration and the huge waterwheel - which once powered the then hi-tech machinery of the mine and workshop - were the highlights.

Year 8 were fantastic throughout the day and members of the public commented on their exemplary behaviour. It was great to see students putting into practice what they had learnt in the classroom and seeing how important natural landscapes are in shaping our lives. Well done Year 8!
