Insights into the Business World from Dr. Steve Davies

Dr. Steve Davies Inspires KS4 and KS5 Students with Insights into Business and Economics

Students of Business Studies and Economics from Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 were treated to an inspiring and thought-provoking speech by Dr. Steve Davies, Senior Education Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA). The event was a unique opportunity for students to engage with one of the leading voices in economic history and policy.

Dr. Davies, a renowned historian and economist, provided insights into how the world of business works. Prior to his role at the IEA, he served as Program Officer at the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University in Virginia. His academic career includes a tenure as Senior Lecturer in the Department of History and Economic History at Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as a period as a Visiting Scholar at the Social Philosophy and Policy Centre at Bowling Green State University, Ohio.

During his speech, Dr. Davies delved into the fundamental principles of economics and the role of free markets in fostering innovation and economic growth. He encouraged students to think critically about economic systems and their impact on society. “Understanding economics is not just about numbers and graphs,” he emphasised. “It’s about understanding human behaviour, decision-making, and the trade-offs we make every day.”

The talk also highlighted historical perspectives on economic policy, drawing from Dr. Davies’ extensive research and publications, including his book Empiricism and History and his work as co-editor of The Dictionary of Conservative and Libertarian Thought. Students were captivated by his ability to connect historical context with contemporary economic challenges, making complex topics accessible and engaging.

One of the highlights of the event was the interactive Q&A session. Students posed insightful questions on topics ranging from the role of government in markets to the challenges of globalization. Dr. Davies’ responses were both informative and encouraging, sparking lively discussions amongst the audience.

Miss Platt, Head of Business Studies and Economics, praised the event, saying, “Dr. Davies’ visit has been an invaluable experience for our students. His expertise and passion for the subject has left a lasting impression and inspired many to delve deeper into the study of economics.”

The school extends its gratitude to Dr. Steve Davies for taking the time to share his knowledge and to the IEA for facilitating this enriching experience. Events like these are integral to preparing our students to become informed and engaged participants in the world of business and economics.
